As Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs at the University at Buffalo, A. Scott Weber, PhD, leads efforts to ensure that undergraduate and graduate students have a transformative educational experience with opportunities to engage in truly distinctive research, creative and public service activities that are hallmarks of a top-tier university education. Weber provides leadership for the management of student enrollment across both the undergraduate and graduate sectors, centralized student-support services and transformative extracurricular programs.
Under Weber’s leadership, UB introduced the “Finish in 4” program as part of the university’s commitment to helping undergraduate students graduate in four years. Given today’s economic landscape, UB recognizes the value of completing a four-year degree on time and is committed to providing the necessary academic resources for students to achieve this goal. As part of UB’s efforts to improve four-year graduation rates while providing unique educational opportunities to all undergraduate and graduate students, UB has increased the seat capacity in critical-need courses and is developing a winter intersession to serve as an accelerated academic term between the fall and spring semesters. Weber also has instituted an enrollment planning culture and process for the university that will help shape graduate and undergraduate enrollment as the University responds to changes in student career goals, changing demographics, and budget allocation models.
As former chair of the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering in the UB School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Weber helped to establish the university’s transportation engineering research program and catalyzed significant improvements in the department’s national ranking. His research focuses on biodegradation of chemicals in water and soil, particularly pharmaceuticals discharged in wastewater, the reclamation of environmentally impacted sites known as brownfields, and coupling the reuse of post-consumer products materials and geothermal systems. He has been the recipient of numerous awards for this work.
A member of the UB faculty since 1983, Weber twice was named professor of the year by the UB student chapter of Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society. He received a BS in civil engineering in 1977 and an MS in sanitary engineering in 1978 from Virginia Tech. In 1983, he earned a PhD in civil engineering from the University of California-Davis.
