The Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Education is pleased to accept nominations for the annual UB Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity. With this award, the university recognizes the outstanding mentorship that exists at UB and seeks to encourage further faculty commitment to and participation in the undergraduate research and creative experience.

The Award

Faculty selected for the first UB Faculty Award for Excellence in Mentoring Undergraduates in Research and Creative Activity were recognized for their contributions during the UB Celebration of Student Academic Excellence last April. Read about the 2011 recipients.

Students, staff, faculty, alumni and the public are invited to nominate faculty who exhibit the qualities of good mentorship, including but not limited to:

  • Establishing a strong professional mentoring relationship with their student(s)
  • Acting as a role model for methods of inquiry or artistic expression in the chosen field of study and for the responsible and ethical conduct of research or creative activity
  • Demonstrating an ability to inspire students
  • Supporting the dissemination of student work through recognized professional outlets

Application for Award

Each nomination should consist of a 300- to 800-word nomination package. Nominations must be received no later than March 2, 2012. Faculty can be nominated based on the mentoring of a single student or the collective mentoring of many students over a sustained period. The nomination should indicate how the faculty member has been instrumental in the development of a student or students and why their mentoring was extraordinary. Specific examples will be helpful to the committee in their evaluation. Previous winners are not eligible for renomination. The 2012 award winners will be recognized at the UB Celebration of Student Academic Excellence on April 5, 2012.

Questions regarding the nomination process may be directed to Dr. Letitia Thomas, lthomas@buffalo.edu, Undergraduate Research Team Coordinator. Thank you.
